Stress is Natural

We get stressed out in all sorts of situations. For the most part, stress comes and goes. It can even be motivating…

Occasionally (often?) it sticks around and festers, becoming chronic stress. And that’s a problem!

CHRONIC STRESS is not good for you or your salon business!

When you are stressed you are no fun to be around. Your clients will sense it. This could easily cause your business to slow… adding more stress!

You know stress can cause serious health problems, even some major health issues. If you don’t learn how to manage it, chronic stress can cause:

  • heart problems
  • weight gain
  • diabetes

It can put a big damper on your nervous system, upsetting your emotions and your thoughts. What a DRAIN on your business and your LIFE!  What I want to share with you today is how to manage stress so you can be happier, healthier and consistently serve your clients better.

As a busy hair stylist, nail tech, barber, esthetician… it might not be easy for you to get in the habit of taking care of your stress. It wasn’t for me. But it’s WORTH IT!

Because I am happier now for doing it. Not to mention I get to enjoy greater income prosperity!

Salon Plaza’s 7 BEST Salon Owner Stress Relief Strategies:

1. Choose Who You Let In Your Life

Our first salon owner stress relief strategy is to pay attention to the people around you. If you notice that certain people are bringing you down, then shield yourself. If you can, get them out of your life.

If your workplace has too much daily DRAMA, and you want more CONTROL over your schedule and the FREEDOM to create your own environment, then being your own boss at SALON PLAZA might be your best answer… Cosmetologists in Virginia, Maryland, and DC can Inquire Now!

Also take a look at stress from other than work. I had a friend who only called when she wanted a babysitter or money. I finally got the nerve to tell her,

“No More”

Wow, what a difference that made in my day. I felt like a weight was lifted.

This is all about standing up for yourself. Let’s say your child’s school needs a volunteer for something. If you can’t do it, just say NO. It is okay to say no. Most people will understand. If they don’t, then probably they don’t care about your well-being. Those are the people you want to limit the impact on your life.

You must take care of YOU before you can take care of anyone else. Because if you don’t, then how are you going to help anyone else?

2. Breathe!

Salon owner stress relief strategy #2 is to just breath. When you start getting stressed your breathing will get faster. Breathing rapidly can cause you to hyperventilate.

When you notice this, try and slow your breathing. Start by breathing in through your nose as you count to ten and then out through your mouth for a count of 10.

While you are doing this, think of something that makes you feel happy. My breathing mantra is, “In with the good. Out with the bad.”

3. Give Yourself the Gift of Stillness

Taking time to meditate is a great salon owner stress relief strategy. Start by sitting straight up. If you are on the floor you can crisscross your legs. If you are sitting on a couch or chair, make sure your feet are touching the floor, connecting your body with the earth.

Now close your eyes and clear your mind by thinking positive thoughts and affirmations. Or just follow your breath going in and out.

Keep focused on that positive vibe. Slow your breathing down to help get your heart rate back to a normal rhythm.

4. Relax with Gentle Stretches

Yoga is another great stress reliever that can help relax the muscle tension that happens when you’re stressed out. Yoga does not have to be as hard as it might seem at first. I try to do it every morning. If you look on YouTube you can find all kinds of videos for beginners.

5. Relax Your Body with Your Mind

Psychologists teach this to clients who have panic attacks. This method will help you learn to control your body’s reaction to stress. Start either at the top with your face or the bottom with your feet.

Let’s start at the top. What you want to do is tighten your facial muscles for 30 seconds and then release. Repeat this twice. Then move down to your neck and do the same. Tighten and relax each muscle group until you reach your toes.

6. Take Time to Journal

Let me encourage you to journal. You can journal the old school way with paper and pen, or you can blog. I personally like to blog. Either way, there is healing power in putting your words on paper or post. When you do this, you are getting circular thoughts off of your mind, clearing the way for new vitality.

If you really want to get rid of troubling thoughts, write down on paper what’s bothering you, and then burn the paper. It can be very freeing.

7. Consider Going Solo

If you work for someone else in a multi-chair salon, you are dealing with a lot of commotion every day. Other people’s drama that you really can’t control.

Now there is a better way!

Consider running your own business from a Salon Plaza Studio Salon… it may be easier than you think.
