Open A Salon Secret #1: Is Your Location Helping Or Hurting You?

You may be wondering…

How do I pick the best location for my beauty salon?

It’s easier to start a business than make it profitable. These days, with hair salons and nail spas, that’s especially true. Everything costs more, and people are cutting back on how much they spend. Plus, there’s so much competition out there!

That’s why, to be successful, new salon business owners must choose their location carefully.  Not all retail space is created equal!

For starters, pick a location that’s convenient for your current clients. Keeping as many of your regulars as you can will get you off to a better start.  But to stay in business, you’ll have to attract new clients, too. It will be easier for you to get more new businesses if you choose a high-traffic location.

At first, it may seem like a good deal to find a less expensive space, but without the visibility and traffic you’d get from a class A space – near a big grocery or department store, for instance – it will cost you a lot in the long run.

Few (or no!) walk-ins mean lost business and more money spent on marketing to survive. The location you choose really is a big factor for your success.

Your next question might be… “How much will money will I need to start a salon?”

Beauty salon start-up costs can be a bear.

For a traditional salon, start-up costs can be daunting, depending on how big you want to get. You’ll need to put a deposit on a retail space and outfit it with styling and shampoo chairs. And maybe a hair drier, too.

But that’s just the beginning! As a new salon owner, you’ll need to buy salon mats, mirrors, flat irons… And PRODUCTS! Products to use, and products to sell.  Everything to serve your clients best.

If you choose to start from scratch and do everything yourself, you can expect to invest at least $45,000 up front, plus inventory costs of about $14,000.  Whoa!  $60,000 isn’t pocket change!
