Before you choose a salon name, consider this…
Women are up against something men never have to think about. As our lives change, our name can change, too.
If you build your brand under your personal name and your life circumstances change as mine are about to…
You May Be Faced With A Major Decision
That’s how I got on the Steve Harvey Show, which aired on April 1, 2014. For more than 20 years I have carefully built my brand identity as a celebrity hairstylist and barber under my married name. Even though I own a salon named Salon of Elegance and have been divorced for years, I’m known in the industry as “Shadonna Jordan.”
Now that I’m getting married to the most wonderful, handsome, loving man in the world, I face a dilemma. Should I keep my ex-husband’s last name, or should I take on my fiancée’s name, Bethel?
As a celebrity platform artist, brand identity is everything. The salon name “Shadonna Jordan” leads to business. No one would recognize me as “Shadonna Bethel”.
But I do want to start my life off right with my new husband.
You can catch this dilemma being dramatized on the Steve Harvey Show – but remember, TV is scripted to keep viewers interested. My husband Diandre and I worked out a solution. I will change my legal name to Bethel and keep Jordan for business.
Choose A Salon Name That Won’t Change
My circumstances point to an important question about choosing a salon name. For ambitious, career-focused, female cosmetologists, it may be best to build your brand under your salon name or stage name. That way you can separate business from your personal life. Whatever you do professionally behind and beyond the chair, you’ll have the same brand.
Act Like A Woman, Think Like A Man
Being on the Steve Harvey show was a great experience – it gave me the opportunity to talk about my business. It inspires me to do more. I feel blessed when I look at where I started and where I am today. I know what I went through to get to this point, and I appreciate everything it took to get me here.
I am so thankful for the people in my life who I can count on when I need them.
I started as little girl with a passion to be a stylist to the stars – I owned this dream in the 6th grade and have watched myself grow into a successful business owner and author, as seen on TV. Right now I’m working on my Trichology Certification. I plan to open up a private practice to treat hair loss and related problems.
